U.S. Coast Guard's Newest Icebreaker Returns From Arctic Patrol as U.S. Expands Polar Fleet
The U.S. Coast Guard's newest polar icebreaker, USCGC Storis (WAGB 21), returned to Seattle after a 36-day deployment to the Bering Sea. Commissioned in 2025, the 360-foot medium icebreaker conducted winter patrol operations focused on icebreaking performance and operational readiness. The return coincides with Davie Defense finalizing a $3.5 billion contract to build five new Arctic Security Cutters under the trilateral ICE Pact framework, with first delivery scheduled for 2028.
