Interview: How Does a Wing Sail Get Installed on a Ship?
Oceanbird, a joint venture between Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Alfa Laval, discusses the engineering and installation of Wing560 wind-assisted propulsion systems on merchant vessels. The company explains that newbuild projects require integration from the design stage, while retrofits demand hull reinforcements. On the North Atlantic trade route, one wing sail installed on a PCTC can save 19 tonnes of fuel per passage. Oceanbird provides crew training at its land-based prototype in Landskrona and emphasizes treating wind propulsion as a fully integrated solution rather than an add-on.
