Valaris Fined for Rig Worker's Fatal Fall Through Hole in Deck Grating
A court in Aberdeen, Scotland fined rig operator Valaris $385,000 for the death of Jason Thomas, 50, who fell through a hole left by a missing deck grating on January 22, 2023. The UK Health and Safety Executive determined that polymer grating fasteners were dislodged by wave action during rough conditions. Following the incident, Ensco (later acquired by Valaris) replaced all polymer grating on its fleet with galvanized steel grating.
