EU Steps Up to Fund Ocean Data Collection as U.S. Pulls Back
The European Commission launched OceanEye, a new program to boost EU contributions to global ocean data collection with an initial investment of about $105 million. The initiative aims to build approximately one third of the world's ocean observing system by 2035 and secure 35 percent of the ocean tech market for Europe. The announcement follows the Trump administration's decision to remove all seven Ocean Observatories Initiative cabled installations, a project that cost $370 million to install and was expected to operate for at least 15 more years.
