Tanker Awaiting Scrapping Stuck in Limbo by US Sanctions
The product tanker Maymei, built in 1997 with a scrap value of $4.96 million, arrived in Chattogram, Bangladesh on May 22 for scrapping but became stuck in anchorage after the U.S. State Department added it to the Iran sanctions list on May 28. The 44,936 dwt vessel, registered in Palau and owned by a Hong Kong-based Chinese company, had loaded petrochemical products from Iran in July 2024. Cash buyers and scrappers face legal uncertainty as regulations prevent transaction completion, though the principal owner has agreed to take back the ship.
