Burundi's Main Port Struggles to Recover From Flooding
Burundi is racing to rebuild its main Port of Bujumbura, damaged by floods in late 2023 and early 2024. The landlocked nation depends on the port for over 80 percent of its imports and exports. More than 240,000 people were affected and over 48,000 displaced, with total losses estimated at $210 million. A detailed engineering study commissioned by UNDP and the EU contends that future facilities must be anchored on resilience against evolving climate and hydrological risks.
