Hormuz Shipping Crisis to Flatten 2026 LNG Trade; 65% Demand Growth by 2050
Shell forecasts that shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz due to the Iran war will keep global LNG trade flat in 2026, with growth resuming in 2027. Despite the crisis shutting one-fifth of monthly LNG supply, the company expects global demand to rise 65% by 2050, reaching nearly 700 million tons annually, driven largely by Asia's shift toward lower-emission alternatives. About 180 million tons of new LNG supply is forecast to enter the market by 2030.
