Falling Freight Rates Drive Maersk to Q1 Loss in Shipping Segment
Maersk reported a $192 million loss in its shipping segment for Q1 2026, driven by freight rates falling an additional 14 percent amid industry overcapacity. CEO Vincent Clerc cited skyrocketing fuel costs jumping nearly two-thirds, costing the company nearly $500 million monthly. Despite volumes rising over 9 percent and fleet utilization reaching 96 percent, the carrier faces continued pressure from market volatility and new vessel deliveries contributing to oversupply.
