Pirates Become More Aggressive Using Gunfire in Attempts to Board Ships

Pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden and Somali coast have intensified significantly. This week alone, three attempted boardings occurred northeast of Aden, with attackers using gunfire and RPGs. The Maritime Security Center Indian Ocean (MSCIO) reported the latest incident on June 17 approximately 105 nautical miles northeast of Aden, Yemen, where vessel security teams successfully repelled armed skiffs. Atalanta has documented increased incidents since April, with three ships boarded and taken to positions off Yemen's coast.
