Peru Advances in Port Modernization to Consolidate as a Pacific Logistics Hub

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Aldo Prieto Barrera, highlighted that Peru is making progress in consolidating a modern, efficient, and competitive port infrastructure, which will strengthen foreign trade and position the country as a strategic connection point between South America and the main international markets. During his participation in the international seminar "International Sales, Transport Risks, and Port-Related Challenges," the head of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) stated that the country is going through a decisive stage to expand its port capacity and strengthen its logistics platform in the face of sustained growth in foreign trade and new dynamics of international trade.

In this context, Prieto Barrera emphasized that the commissioning of the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal marked the beginning of a new era for the Peruvian port system, by bringing national markets closer to Asia and strengthening the country's integration with one of the most dynamic regions of the world economy. He also reported that the MTC has put together a project portfolio that will mobilize investments exceeding USD 2.3 billion to expand and modernize the infrastructure of seven maritime ports, including Callao, Matarani, Salaverry, and Paita. These investments will increase operational capacities, optimize port services, and respond more efficiently to the demands of international trade.

The minister also highlighted the potential of the Callao - Chancay logistics hub, an economic, industrial, and port corridor that will contribute to transforming the way Peru integrates into international markets. He indicated that this process will be complemented by a modern framework aimed at attracting investments, streamlining customs procedures, and generating quality jobs through the development of private special economic zones. "We must continue building modern infrastructure, facilitating trade, and creating the conditions to fully take advantage of the opportunities of the global economy," said Prieto Barrera, who stressed the importance of maintaining legal certainty, clear rules, and an environment of trust for investment.

It is worth noting that Jenifer Alfaro Borges, representative of the International Union of Lawyers (UIA), presented an award to the Minister of Transport and Communications, Aldo Prieto Barrera, for his outstanding work in public management in the Transport and Communications sector.

The seminar brings together national and international specialists in foreign trade, maritime law, commercial contracts, and international transport, who analyze the distribution of risks and responsibilities among sellers, buyers, and carriers; the application of Incoterms 2020; transport contracts; port logistics; and the resolution of international disputes. The activity, held at the Casona of the National University of San Marcos, aims to promote the exchange of knowledge and offer a comprehensive vision of the main legal challenges related to the international sale and transport of goods, thus contributing to the strengthening of legal certainty and the country's logistical competitiveness.
