The fishing industry improves its efficiency by up to 30% with the application of a circular economy in its production processes, stated the Association of Fishmeal and Fish Oil Producers (Apro).
It reported that producing one ton of fishmeal previously required about six tons of raw material; today, approximately 4.2 tons are needed.
This evolution is due to the incorporation of clean technologies and closed systems that allow for the recovery of processing components, their reincorporation into the production chain, and the reduction of waste generation, Apro indicated.
Araceli Lay, Apro's spokesperson, explained that the modernization of plants has made the circular economy a key tool for improving productive efficiency and reducing resource consumption.
"Components obtained during the different stages are recovered and reincorporated into the process. In this way, we make better use of raw material, reduce energy consumption, and move towards production with a lower environmental impact," Lay noted.
Indirect steam drying systems allow for the recovery and reuse of components such as stickwater, bloodwater, oils, and fats. As a result of these advancements, the efficiency of the production process has improved by approximately 30%, and fuel use has been reduced by 24%.
The application of this model also extends to materials used outside the plants. Between 2019 and 2026, companies in the sector recovered over 2.8 million kilograms of discarded fishing nets to transform them into raw material for the manufacture of new products.
In 2026 alone, more than 250,000 kilograms of nets were recovered, generating resources for environmental and social initiatives.
Thus, the fishing industry expands the circular economy from its production processes to the recovery of materials that can acquire a new useful life.
