The National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) recommends preparedness measures following SENAMHI's meteorological alert N.º 253 (yellow level), which reports a drop in nighttime temperatures in the northern and central highlands, mainly in the departments of Amazonas, Ancash, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Junín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Pasco, and Piura, expected from Tuesday, September 10 to Wednesday, September 11.
According to the statement, minimum temperatures are expected to be close to 2 °C in localities above 3000 m.a.s.l. in the northern highlands and near -5 °C in areas above 3200 m.a.s.l. in the central highlands. Additionally, wind gusts with speeds approaching 45 km/h, scarce cloudiness, and an increase in daytime temperatures are expected.
Given this situation, INDECI recommends taking necessary health precautions, such as avoiding exposure to sudden temperature changes, and covering the head, face, and mouth to prevent cold air from entering the lungs.
Furthermore, it is necessary to wear warm clothing such as sweaters, gloves, hats, and to protect children and the elderly. In case of any respiratory infection, immediate evacuation to the nearest health center is advised. It is also suggested to consume hot beverages, fruits, fresh vegetables, sugar, sweets, and fats to increase resistance to cold, and to store food and drinking water in a safe place.
INDECI, through the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), monitors the alerted departments and coordinates with regional and local authorities regarding the effects of this meteorological phenomenon.
