Study: North American Ports are Getting Fewer Direct Connections
A Bank of Canada analysis reveals that Canadian and U.S. ports have experienced declining direct connectivity to global shipping networks between 2016 and 2023. Port of Vancouver's weighted centrality fell from 0.75 percent to 0.16 percent, while deadweight tonnage capacity at Canadian ports dropped 28 percent. The study attributes the shift to growing trade concentration in East Asia, prompting the Canadian government to announce $3.6 billion in port financing and $1.7 billion for Port of Montreal expansion.
