Europe Doubles Down on the Arctic to Bypass Risky Red Sea Internet Route
The European Union is prioritizing Arctic subsea cable projects to bypass the Red Sea, where 90 percent of Europe's internet traffic currently passes through. The Polar Connect cable project has received priority with $10 million in EU funding for preparatory work, with overall establishment costs estimated at $2.3 billion. Nordic countries, Japan, and South Korea are involved in discussions, though the project faces viability challenges similar to those encountered by US-based Quintillion.
