Okaloosa County Confirms End of Remediation For Ocean Liner
Okaloosa County confirmed that the SS United States has completed its environmental remediation process and is ready to be sunk. The 1952-built vessel will become the world's largest artificial reef 22 miles south of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, pending final approvals from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and EPA. The project, which started in October 2024 with a budget of about $13 million, is expected to generate millions in tourism revenue and create habitat for the marine ecosystem.
