The Suape Industrial Port Complex reported that Pernambuco has entered the history of global energy transition with the inauguration of the world's first engine powered almost exclusively by ethanol for thermoelectric power generation.
This pioneering project is the result of a collaboration between Suape Energia and Wärtsilä Energy, a European giant in the energy technology sector.
The pilot plant, installed in the Complex, has an approximate capacity of 4 megawatts and represents a strategic advance for the use of renewable fuels in electricity generation. Developed in Finland and adapted to operate with Brazilian ethanol, the equipment reinforces Pernambuco's leading role in discussions on innovation, energy security, and decarbonization.
"We are facing a milestone for the Brazilian energy transition. The Suape Energia Ethanol Project reinforces the role of the Suape Complex in building cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. The initiative strengthens our Energy Transition Center, consolidating Suape as a strategic environment for innovation and decarbonization. The news announced this Thursday positions Pernambuco as a benchmark in the sector," said Armando Monteiro Bisneto, CEO of the state-owned company.
The ceremony, presided over by Suape Energia's Technical Director, José Faustino, brought together representatives from the sugar-energy sector, public authorities, members of the Government of Pernambuco, directors of Suape, representatives of the Energy Research Company (EPE), as well as specialists and leaders from the Brazilian electricity sector.
After the event, guests were able to get a close look at the project's structure and follow the technical details of this unprecedented operation worldwide.
The project now moves to the operational testing phase in a real environment, a stage that will evaluate the technology's performance, consumption, reliability, and efficiency.
The initiative also opens new perspectives for integration between the energy and sugar-energy sectors, expanding opportunities for the ethanol chain and for Brazil's sustainable development.
