Grimaldi Group received the Grande Pacifico, a new ammonia-ready Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) with a capacity of 9,800 CEU. The vessel is positioned as the largest in a series of 13 units ordered from the China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu shipyard.
The vessel features 15 decks, a length of 220 meters, a beam of 38 meters, a gross tonnage of 95,534, and a service speed of 18 knots.
Its addition generated an increase of approximately 9% in the capacity of the Grimaldi Lines fleet. In addition to electric and traditional combustion vehicles, the vessel is capable of transporting units powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).
The Grande Pacifico received the Ammonia Ready certification from the Italian National Ship Register (Rina), which certifies its ability to operate with ammonia as a zero-carbon emission alternative fuel.
Built to the highest standards, the vessel has also obtained several additional certifications, including Green Plus, Green Star 3, Comfort Vibration, and Comfort Noise Port.
The vessel achieves emission neutrality at berth through a 5 MWh lithium battery bank and shore power connections. Its maximum efficiency architecture combines 2,500 m2 of solar panels and intelligent energy management with cutting-edge hydrodynamic innovations.
The PCTC features an air lubrication system, a silicone-coated hull, a low-resistance design, and a gate rudder that optimizes the vessel's propulsion and handling.
Furthermore, its electronically controlled main engine is equipped with exhaust gas treatment systems that significantly reduce emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), with the latter well below IMO Tier III limits.
The Grande Pacifico will make its maiden voyage on the Asia-Europe route, departing in the coming days from the Port of Taicang (China) bound for Antwerp (Belgium) and Southampton (England). On board, it will transport a cargo of over 6,900 vehicles and more than 900 linear meters of rolling cargo.
