Iran demands international recognition of Hormuz control and shipping fees
Iran insists on winning international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and the ability to levy fees on ships, according to two senior Iranian sources. Under an interim deal with the U.S., Iran agreed to let ships pass for 60 days without charge, but believes it can maintain control over which vessels pass and their routes. If the deal expires without extension, Iran would start charging fees in mid-August. The Strait transported a fifth of global energy supplies before the war and is just over 20 miles wide at its narrowest point.
