The Nigerian Navy arrested five suspects aged 24 to 43 years hiding in the rudder compartment of the bulk carrier Chinafrie Happiness (174,413 dwt) at Lagos port on June 17, bound for India. The vessel sails under the Liberian flag and is Chinese-owned. According to risk intelligence firm Castor Vali, Nigeria recorded approximately 2,300 stowaway-related incidents last year, with costs estimated at roughly $4.6 million annually, reaching up to $30,000 per incident when including repatriation and compliance handling.
