El Escudo enters service as hybrid passenger vessel at the Port of Los Angeles
El Escudo, a 350-passenger hybrid vessel developed through a partnership involving Harbor Breeze Cruises, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, completed its maiden voyage on May 25th and is now based in San Pedro Bay. The vessel, built by All American Marine, can operate in fully electric, diesel or hybrid modes and is expected to spend at least 30% of its operating time in zero-emission mode. The project, developed under the Los Angeles Marine Emission Reduction (LA MER) initiative with US$31 million in CARB funding and approximately US$30 million in matching contributions, is projected to reduce more than 60 tonnes of emissions annually.
